Your Questions About Drayage, Answered

Drayage is the short-distance transport of goods, specifically shipping containers, within or between local sites like ports, terminals and warehouses. It’s a key link in intermodal transportation, bridging sea, rail and truck transport for efficient shipment flow.

Once a ship docks and containers are unloaded into a port area, a drayage company transports these containers to their next immediate destination; typically a warehouse, rail station or another port.

While both drayage and freight involve goods transport, drayage is short distance (usually within the same city or industrial area), whereas freight covers longer, potentially international distances.

A chassis is a trailer designed to carry shipping containers. Various entities can own them, including shipping lines, leasing companies, motor carriers or drayage companies like Supra, which owns more than 400 chassis.

Overweight container drayage exceeds the legal road transportation weight limit. In the U.S., a common guideline is a gross weight (container and cargo combined) of 80,000 lbs. However, weight limits vary by state, so consult with your local permit contact.

Businesses shipping and receiving goods, particularly via sea transport, need drayage services. This includes importers, exporters, freight forwarders, retailers and wholesalers.
